Choice to Remain Sexually Pure Guffawed

Purity rings. Wouldn’t seem to be a controversial topic, would it? Well, some recent comments have sparked quite a debate.

This week, MTV Video Music Awards host Russell Brand poked fun at the popular singing group, the Jonas Brothers, for wearing purity rings to symbolize their decision to remain sexually abstinent prior to marriage. “A bit of sex occasionally never hurt anybody,” Brand argues. Unfortunately, the statistics prove otherwise.

American teens lead the industrialized world in STDs, lead the entire world in unwanted pregnancies and are more likely to become pregnant and have multiple partners than any other teen on the planet.

“‘Occasional’ sex and the hook-up culture of America today has deeply impacted our teens,” said Rick Schatz, president and CEO of the National Coalition. “And, in part, it’s these false claims that often influence our children to engage in risky sexual behavior.”

To combat such messages of the culture, the National Coalition encourages parents to:
  • Engage in open, honest conversation about sex with their children
  • Spend quality time together to develop a trusting relationship
  • Teach transferable values and critical thinking skills
  • Invite dialogue with their children’s peers
  • Stay on guard—parents are the first line of defense

To help parents become educated, informed and thus better equipped to talk with their children about sex, the National Coalition has produced a four-part booklet series called What Every Parent Needs to Know About. Consider adding this vital booklet series to your parenting toolbox today! Click here for more information.
