MARRIAGE PROTECTION ACT IS BACK IN PLAY
Renamed and renumbered, Republican Senator Wayne Allard of Colorado has reintroduced legislation in the U.S. Senate seeking to codify in the U.S. Constitution the definition of marriage as the relationship of one man and one woman. The newly named Marriage Protection Act will now be SJR 1 (which means that Senate leadership has given it top priority) and was introduced with 22 original cosponsors – including 4 freshman senators who replace 4 senators who voted against the measure last July.

The National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families is right in the center of the fray on this issue and recently joined with dozens of other pro-family organizations in urging President Bush to make the Marriage Protection Act a top priority for the White House during his final term. A letter was sent to Karl Rove, chief advisor to President Bush, asking for a top level White House representative to be assigned specifically to this issue. The letter was signed by Dan Panetti, vice president for Legal & Public Policy for the National Coalition, and also included signatories such as Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family and Tony Perkins with the Family Research Council. The Marriage Protection Act and the efforts of pro-family groups like the National Coalition are making national news. Time magazine is working on a story now and the NY Times recently published this article relating to the group’s letter to Mr. Rove mentioned above:
