Apple's iPhone Recently Launched

As you've probably heard, Apple released their long anticipated iPhone to consumers last Friday. If you have not already snatched one... Apple expects to ship over 10 million phones by the close of 2008 and ensures supply will meet demand.

Its revolutionary design, iPod capability, 3.5 inch color touch screen, and access to the Internet will guarantee this prodigy a rightful place in wireless history.

Sounds great, right? Well, not really.

While the smart phone appears harmless, potential dangers lurk within its multifunctional capabilities...and parents must become educated and aware prior to purchasing an iPhone for their children.

With service plans that allow unlimited access to the Internet, the same pornographic and sexual content only found on home computers is now available in the palm of your child's hand! And to our knowledge, there is no software currently available to filter explicit sexual activity, graphic violence, and crude language.

What's a parent to do?

  1. Become thoroughly educated on the iPhone, or any wireless device, prior to purchasing it for your children.
  2. Set clear and understandable boundaries with your children as they begin to use wireless devices and explain the consequences if they misuse the technology.
  3. Engage in open and consistent discussions with your children about safe use practices.
  4. Ask wireless providers about parental controls and obtain instructions on how to employ all the safety features possible to ensure a safe experience for your child.
  5. Monitor your children's cell phone usage to maximize the benefits of the technology and minimize the risks.
  6. Stay educated through the National Coalition's iCare...about protecting children movement. Learn more at www.icarecoalition.org.
