Culture’s Influence At It Again
You’ve probably heard the hype recently surrounding Miley Cyrus, the 15 year old pop star made famous by the television show Hannah Montana. After posing for a risqué Vanity Fair photo, the once G-rated role model is apologizing to her young fans for the misinterpreted photo shoot.
While Cyrus’ intentions were likely pure, our “Vanity Fair” culture influenced this teen role model to be the subject of sexualized photos which, according to the Disney Channel that airs Hannah Montana, “deliberately manipulate[d] a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines.”
“The subtle, yet swift and effective influence of the culture is impacting us all,” said Rick Schatz, president and CEO of the National Coalition. “Society continues to speak its false messages into the lives of our children and we must, as parents, speak louder!”
