National Coalition Comments on President Bush's U.S. Supreme Court Nomination
After a strong bipartisan vote for John Roberts as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, President Bush appears to have nominated another strong candidate to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. If confirmed, White House counsel Harriet Miers will join Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the second woman on the Supreme Court.
"Although we only have limited information, it appears Harriet Miers possesses excellent credentials to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court," said Rick Schatz, president and CEO of the National Coalition. "As we have previously stated, it is in the best interest of our country to fill Justice O’Connor’s vacancy as quickly as possible. Miers deserves an up-or-down vote from the Senate and a fair and timely hearing, as John Roberts' confirmation process.”
From Miers' recent statements, it is clear she deeply understands the responsibility and role of the courts to strictly apply the law and the U.S. Constitution.
"Our primary goal for the Supreme Court should be obtaining constructionist judges. Miers has given every indication thus far that she is committed to strictly interpreting the Constitution and not legislating from the bench. If confirmed, we hope she will bring that conviction with her to the Supreme Court," added Schatz.

Hate Crime Amendment Added to The Child Safety Act

However, a hate crimes amendment has been added to The Child Safety Act that includes special protections for homosexuals. This amendment greatly endangers the teaching and preaching against homosexual behavior. Read the National Coalition's booklet Thinking Critically, Acting Compassionately by S. Michael Craven, vice president of Religious & Cultural Affairs, for a Christian response to homosexuality. The booklet stresses that Christians are called not only to speak out against the homosexual agenda with truth but also to be the instruments of Christ's love to those involved in the homosexual lifestyle.
