Alert: AT&T Offers Filtering for Mobile Phones

AT&T Inc. has recently announced the most significant advances to date in parental control options for wireless devices! AT&T Smart Limits!" allows parents to set limits for the following:

  • Minutes
  • Download purchases
  • Text and instant messages
  • Time of day or night the phone can be used
  • Numbers the phone can call or text (incoming and outgoing)
  • Internet content access (Internet browsing from the handset)

Once a limit is reached, the service will automatically be restricted. However, calls to and from designated "Allowed Numbers" and calls to 911 will be permitted.

Be advised, however, that even though Apple's new iPhone is available only with AT&T wireless service, it is not compatible with the new filtering software and is not available with Internet blocking capabilities.

Prior to this very recent announcement, no wireless company has offered filtering and/or blocking options for mobile phones. Though the remaining four major wireless providers - Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, Alltel and Verizon - are committed to protecting our nation's youth, no Internet filter/block option for their handsets is currently available.

If you are under contract with a wireless provider other than AT&T, consider calling or writing customer service to request the development of Internet filtering/blocking technology be made the highest priority. Granted, no blocking system is foolproof, but considering 80% of U.S. 15-to-17 year olds have mobile phones, the potential moral and spiritual devastation of unfiltered, handheld pornography is enormous!
