A La Carte Cable Voted Down

The Senate Commerce Committee recently struck down a bill that would require cable companies to offer customers a la carte cable packages. Senator John McCain (R - Ariz.) proposed the amendment to give cable consumers more choice in what content enters their home and to allow them to only pay for the channels they choose to watch. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin supports the a la carte initiative but cable companies believe it would dramatically hurt the industry.

Internet Providers Help Target Pornography

AOL, Microsoft, EarthLink, Yahoo! and United Online have agreed to help stop the online distribution of child pornography. The five Internet services have pledged $1 million to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to fund a Technology Coalition within the organization. The companies will also create tools to help law enforcement limit the distribution of this illegal material while offering their online expertise to prevent the further exploitation of innocent children.

U.S. Crack Down on Human Trafficking

The U.S. is increasing its efforts to crack down on human trafficking and prostitution. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently advocated for tougher policies and stronger investigations into sex trafficking, including crimes committed by U.S. military members abroad. The Department of Defense has also improved its education and awareness to all military personnel serving overseas to decrease the exploitation of women.

MySpace Adds Security Measures

The website www.myspace.com, after receiving complaints about sexual predators using the site to lure children online, will heighten protection measures in an effort to keep their teen users safe. The website will require any member over 18 years old to know the full name or email of a younger member who they want to contact via MySpace. In addition, members will have the option of hiding their profiles from strangers, while making their information only viewable to approved friends.
