National Coalition Announces 2009 Human Trafficking Internship

Every year, millions of women and children are trafficked into an international sex trade that spans the globe, including the United States. Through force, fraud, or coercion, these victims are raped and exploited in a form of modern-day slavery that has been referred to by federal officials as one of the most violent and unconscionable crimes occurring in our country today. In the U.S. and around the world, sex traffickers pocket billions of dollars in profits while their victims are robbed of their innocence, their dignity, and their freedom.

The National Coalition is committed to making a difference in reducing demand for sex slavery while also seeking justice for the victims.

For several years, our Atlanta office—led by the compassion and determination of Regional Director Claire Hertzler—has worked to rescue and restore victims of sex trafficking through education, advocacy, and partnerships designed to raise awareness of the issue in Greater Atlanta.

Now, in 2009, the National Coalition will launch an internship program based in our Cincinnati office that will seek to accomplish two goals:
To mobilize the Christian community in the campaign against sex trafficking
To develop emerging leaders who are passionate about ending sex trafficking and advancing a pure, biblical view of sexuality to a hurting world
The program will provide college-aged interns the opportunity to meet with public officials and anti-trafficking experts across the country, conduct research into the connection between trafficking in persons and the commercial sex industry, and organize events and programs designed to move the Christian community to end demand for sex slavery.

While awareness has been growing in recent years of the nature and magnitude of international sex trafficking, the public is largely uninformed regarding the pervasiveness of the trafficking industry within the U.S. The interns will play an important role in educating the public, and the Christian community in particular, regarding the issue.

The National Coalition is looking for energetic college students who desire an experience that will allow them to grow spiritually and develop valuable professional skills while engaging in the battle to end the trafficking of women and children into the commercial sex industry. The internship may be particularly attractive to students contemplating careers in law, criminal justice, social work, or missions. If this describes you—or someone you know—we look forward to hearing from you!
